Changeable weather.
We've had two weeks of very changeable weather in the Lakes. Last weekend there was some snow on the fells but we were unable to get out and by mid-week temperatures had risen and it melted rapidly. Yesterday's forecast wasn't great and Susan was getting over a sickness bug so we stayed low and headed round the back of Blencathra to climb Carrock Fell and High Pike. This turned out to be a good choice as the cloud eventually lifted to give bright skies. A strong westerly wind made the going difficult and it felt pretty cool at times. Despite this and Susan having a few 'dizzy turns' we enjoyed our first day on the hill in two weeks.
We headed into Keswick afterwards to do some final Christmas shopping and to have tea and scones in Abraham's Cafe.
Climbing the steep and badly eroded lower slope of Carrock Fell.
Carrock Fell summit cairn.
Looking back to Carrock Fell.
Heading the the Lingy Bothy to shelter from the wind and have lunch.
Susan getting in out of the wind.
Heading for High Pike - good to see the sun.
Looking back to Carrock Fell.
High Pike summit.
Heading down quickly to get out of the wind.
Only the road walk back to the car to do.
Keswick's Christmas Lights are always worth a look
Today, the shortest day, was grey, drab and windy. We didn't venture far and settled for a walk down to the coast to watch the waves pounding the shore.
