Skiddaw round.
We decided to complete Susan's Northern Fells today by incorporating Dodd into a route up Skiddaw. It was 3 degrees when we parked at Underskiddaw Church Rooms and headed off for Dodd. The sky was overcast but there were signs that the weather would improve. The climb up was steep in places and as we approached the summit the east wind picked up and the temperature dropped. The top is a very good viewpoint and it's surprising that this was Susan's first visit.
Our next top was Carl Side and it was quite a pull. The ground became frozen well before the top and we both had to put warmer gloves on due to the biting wind. We decided to nip out to Long Side before climbing Skiddaw but didn't bother going out further to Ullock Pike. The sky had cleared considerably by this stage and there were some fantastic views.
There were quite a few people out enjoying the best weather in a while and we past several parties on the steep climb up onto Skiddaw. The summit ridge was white with hoar frost so a little care was needed. We got out of the wind behind the summit shelter and had a hot drink and some food before carrying on to Little Man. This section gave some amazing views down Borrowdale and the Newlands Valley and I had to stop several times to take pictures despite cold hands.
We could have dropped down after this top but decided to carry on over Jenkin Hill to Lonscale Fell. From here we descend to the Latrigg Car Park and then down the road to the car.
A superb day on the hill.
