Snow day.
After two weeks off the hill we snatched an opportunity to get up high today for a play in some snow. The forecast suggested that the eastern fells would have the best weather so we headed for the Helvellyn range. The avalanche risk was high on the eastern side of the ridge so we parked up at Thirlspot and headed over Lower Man to the summit. The cloud was low at first but as we reached the top the sky cleared and we had some tremendous views. There were very few people about and we even had the summit shelter to ourselves. The cornices were very impressive and the one near the Trig Point had clearly avalanched recently.
After a quick snack we headed north for Whiteside and Raise where we stopped again for lunch. From this point it became busier as we came across a number of snowboarders and Ski Tourers on the slopes of Stybarrow Dodd. The snow was very deep here and we wished we'd brought the snowshoes. The views continued to impress as we dropped down from Sticks Pass to Stanah and then Thirlspot. An excellent day out - followed by a meal in Keswick.
