Shortest Day.

The long cold spell continues. It was minus 8C as we headed out, on the shortest day, for a quick wander up Helvellyn and even colder at the Swirls Car park by Thirlmere. There wasn't much new snow on the hill but the old snow was firm and there was lots of ice on the paths. We were glad of our Microspikes which were much more suited to the conditions than full crampons. At this time of the year the fells tend to be quiet and this was certainly the case today.
