A great wee day out.
It was pouring down when we left the house but the forecast promised a good day. We'd decided to climb Helvellyn from Swirls Car Park on the shores of Thirlmere and the rain had stopped by the time we pulled up. The hill was, however, cloud covered and remained so as we climbed steadily up to the summit. A strong south easterly wind pushed down the temperature but did threaten to blow the cloud away.
We didn't linger long on the summit, as there were no views, but as we dropped down towards White Side things began to improve and by the time we reached Raise there were large patches of blue sky. After lunch here we carried on to Stybarrow Dodd before dropping down towards Fisher Place. The sun shone on this leg and the early autumn colours on the fells were superb.
This was the first outing for my new winter boots and they were superb. Incredibly light and very comfortable.
