Cracking day out!!!
The forecast for today encouraged us out early. On route to the fells, however, we changed our original plan to head east as there was more cloud over on that side of the National Park. Instead we headed down Borrowdale and parked at Seathwaite. Our first objective was Base Brown so we headed up the track alongside Sour Milk Gill before climbing it's north east ridge. The becks and the ground were all very dry and the views in the clear air superb. It was cool in a stiff northerly breeze as we headed next for Green Gable and then Great Gable. It wasn't very busy and there was no one at Westmorland Cairn were we had a wee break looking down Wasdale.
Our route off Gable was down the Breast Route to Sty Head Tarn which gave us good views of our next two objectives - Great End and Esk Pike. Just beyond the Sty Head stretcher box we helped a father and son with their navigation. They were walking towards Esk Hause thinking that they were heading towards Great Gable - incredible given the excellent visibility and their excellent new1:25000 OS Map. We soon cut off the main track and headed up the north ridge of Great End - a very quiet and scenic route to the summit where we had lunch.
The next leg of our route was the busiest of the day as we hit the main 'highway' to Scafell Pike from Esk Hause. Things, however, got a bit quieter as we headed up our last top Esk Pike. From the summit we had a great view of our whole route which was bathed in sunshine. The eastern fells were still much cloudier so our change of plan had been a good call.
From Esk Pike it was back to Esk Hause and then down Grains Gill back to the car. A cracking day on the fells!!!!!!!
