Carrock Fell.
The weather has been very mixed in Cumbria this week and there is no sign of any warm temperatures. On Wednesday Susan went for a horse riding lesson and on Thursday we both went out on the bikes to enjoy a sunny and mild evening.
Today we chose to climb Carrock Fell and High Pike - 'Back o' Skidda' - to fit in with a trip to Penrith to try and buy a wood Picnic Table for the back garden. This morning was bright and calm but by the time we set off around mid-day the sky had darkend and it looked like we might get rain. The route up the fell is initially steep and has become much eroded but it soon took us up to the more gentle upper slopes. Despite the cloud there were good views to Bowscale Fell, Blencathra and Skiddaw. We had our lunch on the summit and had to put on hats and gloves to keep warm in the northerly wind.
The path to High Pike can be wet but today it was remarkably dry and we were soon at the summit view point looking across the Solway into Scotland. As we descended rain could be seen to the east but we stayed dry all the way back to the car. A really enjoyable round.
On the way home the rain started just outside Keswick and it's still coming down.
