St John's in the Vale and High Rigg.

Another dreich day in Cumbria and with Susan at work I settled for a low level fell walk. Parking on the A591 below Castle Rock of Triermain I set off in light rain along St John's in the Vale. The path skirts the eastern edge of High Rigg and leads to the small church of St John's in the Vale. From here I climbed steeply up onto High Rigg. On a good day this is an excellent view point but today all the high fells were shrouded in cloud. From the summit I followed the delightful ridge south back to the car. At the far end there is an excellent view of Castle Rock a popular climbing crag with great single and multipitch routes. Today it looked sombre in the rain.

The view south along High Rigg ridge towards Thirlmere.
