Fantastic Day!!!!!

With a promise of High Pressure we headed east today for a wander over the Helvellyn range. We parked up at Glenridding and headed first to Sticks Pass at the northern end of the range. It was a cold and frosty morning and the day held much promise. However, by the time we reached the pass cloud had blocked out the sun and a cold east wind had picked up. As we headed south over Raise and White Side we had to layer up to keep warm but we were rewarded at one point by a Brocken Spectre as the sun broke through.
Once we reached Lower Man things improved. The cloud broke up, the sun came out and the wind dropped a wee bit.
The rest of the day was fantastic - giving great views and some excellent light. From Helvellyn we went over Nethermost Pike and Dollywaggon Pike before dropping down to Grisedale Tarn. At this point we had about two hours of daylight left but we couldn't resist climbing up to Deepdale Hause and then over St. Sunday Crag before dropping down to Patterdale and the road back to the car. The final descent was in the gloaming and we had to watch out for ice. We reached the car in the dark - as one should on a short but perfect winter day.

A disappointing start to the ridge traverse over Helvellyn.
