Blue sky and snow day.

Yesterday more snow fell in the Border hills which are now all very white from top to bottom. The main problem is getting to them. Today with Susan at the wheel we braved the icy roads to see which hills we could get to. After failing to find any parking at the foot of Pykestone Hill we headed along the A701 towards Moffat and managed to pull off the road just beyond the Crook Inn (now sadly closed). From here we could access Broad Law.
We set off in very cold temperatures and were soon putting the snowshoes on. The snow was very deep and although we weren't floating on the surface as expected we made good progress up the hill. The views under the clear blue sky were stunning and got better as we climbed higher. We reached the top at about mid-day and after lunch decided to make the most of the brilliant weather by heading out to Cramalt Craig. This proved to be tough going as even with the snowshoes on we sank, in places, into very soft snow. The views on reaching the top did, however, make it worth while.
From here it was back over Broad Law and down our route of ascent to the car. As we dropped down the sun set to the south west and the moon rose behind us - a fantastic day!!!!!

Late afternoon light on the descent - the end of a perfect day.
