A Wasdale outing.
With the promise of a dry and sunny day it was much easier to get up early than through the week and head for Wasdale. From the National Trust Car Park at Brackenclose we headed, at a steady pace, up Brown Tongue and into Hollowstones. The views here of Pikes Crag and the Central Buttress of Scafell were great but we didn't linger and plodded slowly up loose scree to Mickledore where we broke into sunshine. The panorama to the west and east was stunning.

Scafell Pike's summit was as usual busy so we headed almost straight down to Brown Crag col and then broke away from the main track to take in Ill Crag and Great End. It was just after mid-day and too early to be heading down so we continued to Esk Hause and then on to Esk Pike and Bowfell.

From Bowfell we had clear views of Langdale and it's fabulous Pikes. As I took in the view it was hard not to think of an old family friend Lilly Walker who sadly died last month aged 88. She walked these fells in her younger days with her dad, who was brought up in Langdale, and always enjoyed seeing pictures of them and hearing about my wanderings on them.

The return to Wasdale took us first back to Ore Gap and then down towards Angle Tarn where we joined the main track to Styhead. Several parties were setting up tents at both Sprinkling and Styhead Tarns and Great Gable looked magnificent in the late afternoon sun.

From the Stretcher Box at Styhead we took the high level track back down to Wasdale where we had a quick drink at the Barn Door before returning to the car. It had been one of the best days of the year so far on the fells.
