Fairfield Horseshoe.

The weather forecast suggested a bright morning with heavy showers developing in the afternoon so we left early for Ambleside. As we drove through the Lakes the fells looked good but it was clear that we were in for a windy day. By 9.15 we'd parked up and were ready for the off on our chosen clockwise circuit of the horseshoe. We climbed steadily over Heron Pike and Great Rigg into a strenghtening wind and in just over 2 hours reached the summit of Fairfield. It was quite busy but we found a quiet spot for a quick drink and sandwich. Despite the haze there were good views especially across to Helvellyn.
The next leg took us over Hart Crag and Dove Crag before the start of the descent ridge over High Pike and Low Pike. It was still windy and bright but rain could be seen approaching over Windermere. By the time we dropped off Low Pike towards High Sweden Bridge the rain had started accompanied by thunder and lightening. After five hours and 11 miles we were back in Ambleside and had had an excellent day despite the damp end. The weather forecast had been spot on.
